Stafford Town Centre Brexit 'Straw Poll'

July 18, 2018 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

On Wednesday 18th July, local Liberal Democrats will be setting up a stall in the heart of Stafford to conduct a straw poll of anyone who cares to give us their view on how they may (or may not) have changed their view on Brexit.

BREXIT continues to grip the nation as the Cabinet, the Government and the Opposition tussle between themselves and with each other on what to do. The Lib Dems are still the only major party in touch with a very large number of people who feel at best 'nervous' about tumbling headlong out of the EU. In Stafford and Stone the Lib Dems feel as passionate about staying in Europe as we ever have and thus the need to 'do something'.

At the Stafford event, we won't collect names or addresses or data of any kind, just ask people the following:

  • Did you vote remain or leave 2 years ago?

Give them a red sticker if they voted Leave or a green sticker if they voted Remain

  • Would you change you mind if there was another vote now?

Then they put their sticker onto a large board with a line down the middle.

  •  The right hand side will be headed 'I CHANGED MY MIND' and
  •  the left side will be labelled 'I AM STILL CONVINCED'.

This will provide, for all to see, a photogenic and instantly understandable barometer of the feelings of lots of local people. Using what they say we'll issue a local press release that summarises where Stafford sits, compared to where it sat two years ago. Hopefully there will be a positive shift towards a second vote - but who knows, we all have an open mind, of course.

We shall be in front of the Guildhall Shopping Centre on Wednesday 18th July from 11.00am to 2.00pm, but may stay later if there is lots of interest and engagement. We shall be adorned with Lib Dem rosettes but do look around in case that spot had a busker resident at the time we arrived! We will also have joining forms for the Lib Dems and balloons for children. We hope we can increase our party membership and gain some much needed local visibility.

Please come along and help us towards having a People's Vote.
