News that the Government is planning to postpone the announcement of which post offices are to close until sometime in May has been described as scandalous by Liberal Democrat Councillor Barry Stamp, a leading campaigner to keep Post Offices open.
Barry said the Government were obviously worried that the closure announcement would cause a considerable backlash and unrest and had therefore decided to leave making the final list of closures public until after the Council Election on Thursday 3rd May.
"I am extremely worried that this decision has only been taken to stop the Labour Party doing even more badly in the May Elections, and has nothing to do with a change of heart by the Government."
"It is clear from the two public meetings I helped Age Concern to arrange in Gnosall and Haughton that there is considerable opposition to the closure plans from local residents. When one considers that this picture is being repeated up and down the Country it is obvious the Government will not have an easy ride when they finally announce which post offices they intend to close."
"I am sure the decision to move the announcement of the final list of closures back from the end of March to the middle of May has nothing to do with the Government listening to public feeling and thinking again about their plan but much more to do with saving Labour the humiliation of being wiped out at the local council elections."
"This is a cynical move designed to pull the wool over the public's eyes and allow Labour Councillors to hold on to their seats and shows just how little regards the Labour Party has for peoples views."
"I for one will continue to fight these closures as I believe rural post office's in villages such as Haughton, Gnosall, and Derrington play an important part in community life and should be kept open", said Barry.
