West Midlands Liberal Democrats held a very successful Regional Conference in Wolverhampton yesterday. Several delegates from Stone attended and heard Nick Clegg MP Shadow Home Secretary condemn Labours record on crime. He pointed out that after ten years of Labour rule, violent crime has doubled and just one in a hundred crimes is punished in court.
Nick presented the Liberal Democrats "We can cut Crime" proposals launched recently at the Spring Conference in Harrogate.
Stone delegates were also impressed by a presentation by Cllr. Heather Kidd Libdem Leader of South Shropshire District Council explaining her council's actions on Affordable Housing. "What is being done just over our border in South Shropshire was a real eye opener," said Stone delegate Jamie Battrick. "As a result of a robust partnership between planners, developers, councillors and funding providers, affordable housing is being provided on every new development. In fact, every new development must contain 50%, -yes, 50% - affordable housing. This is no pipe dream. It's actually happening. Isn't that what we need here in the Stone constituency? This is the way to keep our young folk in our towns and villages where, at the moment, spiralling house prices are forcing them into the cities"
(Next year's Regional Spring Conference will be held in Stafford)
