Stafford Borough Council's doorstep recycling collection in parts of Haughton has been described as "shambolic" by Barry Stamp, Borough Councillor for the village. Barry said he was horrified that for months the residents of Newport Road, Ash Drive, and Station Road have had problems and delays in getting their recycling collected.
"Time and time again the Borough Council has highlighted the success of their flagship doorstep recycling scheme and are keen to tell everyone just how much material is being collected. However for many residents of Haughton this picture certainly does not reflect the service they are getting."
"Over the last few months I have been inundated with complaints that recycling is being left or is only half being collected. One particular black spot is Ash Drive where, since the New Year, the recycling has only been collected once on the allotted day. It appears that since the contractors bought new larger lorries some drivers have difficulty negotiating the road."
"There have also been problems in Station Road and Newport Road, where items have been left or collections missed completely. When I asked for an explanation of this poor service I was told that on one occasion the collection lorry had broken down, on another it had been driven into a ditch, and on the third that it was too full to collect from every house."
"This is a shocking state of affairs and many of the residents affected have talked about giving up recycling and just throwing their papers, tins and bottles straight into the wheelie bin."
"I fully support the need to increase recycling, but unless residents have a regular collection service this will never happen. At a time when the Borough Council have started to talk about cutting the weekly wheelie bin collections to once a fortnight and there are moves afoot by some Councils to charge for the amount of rubbish households throw away, it is imperative that the Borough Council and its contractors look carefully at the recycling service they provide."
"At the moment I can best describe the service offered to some residents of Haughton as "shambolic" and as such quite understand why some are saying recycling is not for them. I will be continuing to press the Council to improve it's service to Haughton, and will asking for smaller vehicles to be used in Ash Drive to ensure a regular collection service is provided ", said Barry.
