Stone Libdems condemn canal budget cuts
Delegates from Stone Liberal Democrats attending the Spring Conference in Harrogate this weekend voted in support a motion demanding that the government reverses the cut in funding to British Waterways.
"This was a well attended debate and it became obvious that feelings are running high all over the country about the effect that these cuts to the budget will have on local economies," explained delegate Richard Stevens. "Speaker after speaker explained that canals are the lifeblood of many communities in terms of recreational opportunities and tourism. So many of the arguments were relevant to Stone's situation"
The motion called on the government to use the contingency fund to reverse the cuts and was carried unanimously.
Liberal Democrats have launched an on-line petition - Canal Cuts are Nuts - where members of the public can register their opposition to the budget cuts. Follow the link below to sign the petition.
