Stonefield and Christchurch Town Councillor, Richard Stevens, has campaigned for five years for traffic calming on Longton Road
Staffordshire County Council has written to Stone Town Council to confirm that the Longton Road traffic calming scheme is to be installed as part of the Stonefield and Christchurch Safer Routes to School scheme and that the Council will "endeavour to complete the works in the first quarter of the financial year".
Richard Stevens, Liberal Democrat Town Councillor for the Ward, said "I am delighted that, at long last, we have received a commitment to complete this scheme. I have been campaigning for speed reduction measures on Longton Road since 2001. We've received assurances before which were not fulfilled. I just hope that this time the County Council will deliver the scheme on time"
The scheme will involve the creation of a 'gateway' at the speed limit near Airdale Road with red road markings, 'sharks teeth' markings and enhanced signage. "Longton Road suffers from speeding traffic in both directions," said Richard. "Even after this scheme is completed there is much more to be done to reduce the speed of traffic on other parts of the road. The County Council must accept that this scheme is only the first part of the solution.
