Seven members of the Stone Liberal Democrat party attended last weekend's Spring Conference at Harrogate. Charles Kennedy, the party leader, addressed the conference on Saturday morning and declared that the story of the present session of parliament was of the Liberal Democrats having emerged as the real opposition to Labour.
He pointed to issues such as Iraq, top-up fees, council tax and poverty level pensions where the Liberal Democrats had been the real opposition and referred to the "flip flop" style of Michael Howard's opportunistic style of leadership of the Tory party.
Richard Stevens, Stone's prospective parliamentary candidate, had an opportunity to meet the leader. "Charles was in great form. He is really fired up and ready to fight this coming General Election. I've never seen the party in such a state of readiness. With Charles leading the campaign and Chris Rennard organising it, I'm confident that the party is going to make some very significant gains."
