Libdems supplant Tories as the effective Opposition

Charles Kennedy and the Liberal Democrats now provide more effective opposition to the Government than Michael Howard, according to a poll for today's edition of The Independent on Sunday.
"These findings confirm the fact that, under Michael Howard, the Tories have failed to make any impact with the electorate" said Richard Stevens, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Stone Liberal Democrats. "Whether it be the war in Iraq; pensions or ID cards -or any other policy issue - it is clear that in parliament only the Liberal Democrats are prepared to hold this government to account"
The poll also shows that young people have effectively written off the Conservatives as a real alternative to Labour. 53% of people aged between 18 and 24 thought that the Conservatives would be out of power for at least 10 years.
