Richard Stevens addressing the Regional Conference
Liberal Democrats at their Regional Conference at Solihull yesterday unanimously backed the campaign to stop the proposed M6 Toll. The Emergency Motion was proposed by Barry Stamp, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Stafford constituency and seconded by Richard Stevens, Chairman of Stone Liberal Democrats.
"Our motion calls on the Department of Transport to abandon the concept of a new toll road" said Richard. "It also calls on the government to put on hold any plans to widen the motorway. We believe that nothing should be done until proper consideration has been given to the Atkins High Speed Line Study which supports the the development of a high speed rail link between London and the Midlands and beyond."
Richard added " Liberal Democrats believe that the only responsible policy is one that encourages people out of their cars by offering a safe reliable and affordable public transport system. A high speed rail link would be a real alternative for road users on North- South journeys. Building more roads simply means more cars and more pollution. We cannot build our way out of congestion"
The Atkins report is available on the Department for Transports website. It can be found by searching for 'HSL' on www.dft.gov.uk
