High speed trains could run from London to Glasgow by 2016
Stone Liberal Democrats have welcomed the proposal to build a new high speed rail line from London to the north, proposed in a report published today. The Atkins report, "High Speed Line Study", concludes that a new line would relieve anticipated overcrowding expected by 2016 and that "it is capable of delivering greater net benefits than other rail or highway schemes"
Richard Stevens, Chairman, said "This report clearly demonstrates that the only solution to the demand for increased North-South journeys is investment in a high speed rail route. Building more and more roads is not the answer. This report is extremely detailed and well argued. It should be essential reading for all of us who are opposed to the proposals to build an M6 Toll road through Staffordshire"
The Atkins report is available on the Department for Transports website. It can be found by searching for 'HSL' on www.dft.gov.uk
